How or why do tortoises get salmonella?

I don't know exactly about tortoises, but I have owned many, many semi-aquatic turtles/terrapins and Salmonella is a natural part of their digestive tract, much like E.Coli is apart of ours. They can't help it, they just produce it naturally. It's your responsibility to clean up after the turtle and wash your hands after handling.
