Leopard gecko salmanella?

Im a 14 year old boy who has wanted a leopard gecko really bad and my parents say i cant get one because of the fact of salmonella, my mom babysits is having a leo that bad if i kept it down stairs when the kids are always up stairs, could they be effected by salmonella? and if you could give me some advise how to keep that chance little as possibl.
