I need some help winning this argument for my kids?

My husband brought two turtles. Shortly afterwards, my youngest son got sick with salmonella. His pediatrician asked if we had any amphibians/reptiles in the house and said to get rid of them. My husband refused to get rid of them and blamed me for contaminating the baby through raw chicken. There is no way to lock the tank and it is too heavy for me to move by myself, so it sits in the living room within easy reach of my now two year old. I tried taping the lid down, but my son rips it off. Usually he just throws stuff in there but today he stuck a rock from the tank in his mouth. I did what I could but he could still get salmonella again. How can I get my selfish husband to get rid of these disease carrying turtles and replace them with something that wont make our kids sick. I know I'm right on this one but he still doesnt want to get rid of his turtles. If I cannot get him to get rid of them would it be wrong of me to go against him and get rid of them myself?
